Water – That’s What’s In the Fountain of Youth

Ah, the mythical fountain of youth.  Throughout history, tales have been told of fountains of youth that are said to make people younger, cure disease, heal injuries, and give special powers.  While these are all simply tales, the truth is that plain ol’ water makes people (look) younger, helps prevent and relieve disease and sickness, can aid in injury healing, and can give the power of more energy.  DSC03501-B

I was talking to a gentleman at the gym one day and telling him some of my life history.  As I talked, a confused look came over his face.  It was becoming clear to him that based on my history, I must be older than he thought I looked.  He finally asked me just how old I was.  When I told him, he said, “Wow, you must drink a lot of water!”  Actually I do.

I drink a lot of water, because I know what all it does for me.

Like….

  1. Water is one of the most vital sources of energy in the body.  We know that the human body, being made of a large percentage of water, cannot go very long without water.  Most records suggest a maximum of about ten days, but, after three days, many people will start noticing ill effects.
  2. Water triggers all manner of enzymatic processes in the body. Without sufficient water, these processes slow, the metabolism slows, and fatigue sets in.  Drink some water to pep you up.
  3. Water can eliminate fluid retention. When not enough water is available to the body, the body starts to retain sodium to ensure that fluid is retained in the body.  Thus drinking more water actually helps ease water retention.
  4. Water can lower blood pressure. Your blood is about 92% water.  When you don’t drink enough water, your bloody gets thick and doesn’t flow as smoothly through your veins, arteries, and capillaries, and high blood pressure can result.
  5. Water prevents gallstone formation.
  6. Water eases allergies and asthma. When your body loses water, more histamine is produced.
  7. Water prevents wrinkling, discoloration, and aging of the skin.
  8. Water prevents or eases skin disorders. Without sufficient water, we have a harder time eliminating toxins via our skin.
  9. Water can lower your cholesterol levels.
  10. Water prevents bladder and kidney problems.
  11. Water aids our digestive system.
  12. Water prevents constipation. Sufficient water is needed to move waste through the colon and out of the body.
  13. Water eases joint pain and stiffness.
  14. Water can prevent overeating. It’s true that sometimes we mistake thirst for hunger pangs and eat when we really could have satisfied our body with water.
  15. Water can boost your metabolism.
  16. Water flushes out toxins from all parts of the body.
  17. Water lowers your risk of heart attack. *Drinking mineral water can provide some extra magnesium for your body.  Magnesium deficiency has been cited in a large number of sudden death heart attacks.
  18. Water can prevent headaches. Some headaches are caused by dehydration.
  19. Water can lower your risk of cancer. Drinking plenty of water can help lower your risk of all cancers, but is particularly helpful for cancers of the colon and bladder.  The colon and bladder need plenty of water to flush out the toxins that can accumulate in them.
  20. Water increases the production of new muscle cells. Water makes up over 70% of our muscles.  *Did you know a good massage therapist can often tell if your muscles are dehydrated?
  21. Water makes for a healthier, better brain. Your brain is largely made up of water.
  22. Water carries nutrients throughout the body. All the cells of your body need nutrients.
  23. Water regulates your body temperature.
  24. Water flushes fat from the body.
  25. Water can lessen addictive urges.

I’m sure I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture (or pitcher – of water).
