How to Do a Detox Bath

Detox baths are simple and easy and improve your health.  Try a detox bath two to three times per week.

*If you do heavy exercise, I recommend doing your detox bath on the days that you do your hardest workouts.  I try to lift heavy on Mondays and Thursdays and thus, try to take my detox baths on those days.

How to do a detox bath – Start with a clean bathtub.  =-)  Fill the tub with water as hot as you can stand it without scalding yourself.  Keep the room hot as well.  The heat will help encourage your body to sweat out some toxins.  Yes, you want to sweat in the bathtub.  Add detox ingredients (below) while the water is running.  Fill the tub with enough water that you can immerse yourself to your neck/shoulders.  Relax for about twenty minutes (or more).  Relaxing music and candles are highly encouraged.  *If your lucky enough like me to have a large tub that accommodates two people, enjoy the bath with a partner.  You can scrub each others backs.

Basic Detox Bath Formula – 2 C. Epsom salt (or magnesium flakes), 1 C. baking soda, and 10 drops of essential oil

Choosing essential oils for your detox bath – 1.  For actually detoxing, both mandarin and grapefruit are known for overall detoxification.  Mandarin would be more relaxing.  2.  If you are taking your bath in the morning or to re-energize, try peppermint, eucalyptus, or lemon.  3.  If you are taking your bath in the evening or to relax, try lavender, chamomile, or bergamot.

Beyond the basic formula and varying your essential oils, you can add other things to your detox bath such as tea bags.  Add a bag of green tea to your bath for antioxidant support.  Or choose other herbal teas or make your own bath tea.  Add crushed, dried flower petals such as calendula or rose or lavender (just be sure they don’t clog your drain! – you can put them in a sachet).  Add a cup of milk (regular, coconut, or almond).  Add a 1/4 cup ginger powder if you have any bacterial infections.  Explore ideas on Pinterest!

If you like a bubble bath, purchase a more natural product.  Most are made with chemicals and stuff that will keep you toxic.  Try California Baby Bubble Baths (Target) or Aura Cacia Aromatherapy Bubble Bath (Earth Fare or Whole Foods) or Aura Cacia Aromatherapy Foam Bath.
